tissons ensemble,
an educational project on textiles
~ 2021
As part of the artistic residency program Création en cours*, I spent few weeks in the South-West of France. I worked with a class of an elementary school, to pass on knowledge and create projects about weaving. Balanced between an ancestral know-how and contemporary creativity, this process is an exciting subject to share with children because it is both playful and technical, practical and rooted in the local area. While textile production is one of the most polluting industry in the world, this project questions our relationship with fabrics and highlights the issues involved in their creation, production and consumption.

*project led by Les Ateliers Médicis, the French Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture.

Then, children collaborated with Tissage Moutet, one of the last textile mill in southwestern France. The traditional decor of the region -symmetrical stripes- was reinterpreted by the class and then woven on the mill's Jacquard looms. This was a unique opportunity for them to produce a real industrialy woven textile and to discover this heritage site only a few kilometers from their school.
